Newsletter: Lesson #46: Understanding Personalities Helps You Communicate With Others

Hey – Walker and Davis here.

Happy Saturday morning to the Laying Foundations community!

A key part of your career in construction is getting to the point where you stop thinking about yourself more than others. This lesson is all about what you can do to help yourself learn more about the people you make a difference in daily.

Today’s issue takes about 4 minutes to read, and was written for you by Davis Hambrick.

Enjoy!

Meme Of The Week

Let’s talk about how personalities help you communicate with others

First – we need to discuss the 4 major personality groups.

There are numerous personality companies you can learn from or use. I am blessed to have an Aunt who has taught me everything about people. Her company – Eagle Center for Leadership has created 4 personalities based on animal pictograms.

It is a great tool that can help you remember the tendencies of each personality.

4 Major Personality Types:

Introverted – People Oriented

 – Internal thinker yet loves connecting with people

 – When they speak their words are worth their weight in gold

  – Needs time to process and think. This is not the type of person you can push and hope they will finish faster, this personality will take longer if you do that.

Introverted – Task-Oriented

 – Internal thinker and loves completing lists

 – Needs data to make decisions

 – Great at details and finishing projects

 – Neglects the people skills to further in relationships because of being overly critical of others

Extroverted – People Oriented

 – Is the life of the party

 – Has a hard time understanding the why if it is not fun

 – Values relationships in every aspect of their life

Extroverted – Task-Oriented

  – Will figure out a way to move the mountain at all costs

 – Needs direct conversations to understand

 – Lives in a 30,000-foot view

After you understand the basics of each personality, the next step is to figure out the people you interact with daily on the job site.

Make a list in your notes app on your smartphone of the names you interact with daily.

Beside their name put your guess of their personality and the next time you talk to them, try to communicate to them how their personality needs it.
It is completely okay to get it wrong, all you have to do is try another one based on the feedback you are getting.

Once you know their personality, figure out these things:

1. What motivates/drives them

2. What they strongly dislike

3. Ask them how they would like to receive feedback

4. Last but not least – what is their favorite food group

You might be asking, why is this so important?

I will tell you why, in my opinion, this separates good leaders from great leaders. These great leaders have spent time investing in themselves and understanding personalities so that they can impact the people they are around daily.

Most people don’t care enough to listen to the words of someone else nonetheless actually understand how I need to communicate to them. If you learn this relational skill you will begin to grow with people on the jobsite like never before.

This helps you communicate with others because you took the time to meet them where they are and speak that individual’s language.

Quality of the Week: Humility – value others above yourself.

20-Year-Old Self Advice: It is overrated to only think about yourself – what makes great leaders are people who figure out how to make the team successful.
